Shark's Tooth hosting ACC Mens Golf Championship – WJHG

PANAMA CITY, Fla. (WJHG/WECP) -Some of the best collegiate golfers in the country will be going head to head this weekend at the Shark’s Tooth Golf Club on the west end of Panama City Beach. The Atlantic Coast Conference bringing it’s mens golf Championship to that course. All 12 of the ACC’s mens teams on hand to compete for that. Most of the teams arriving in our area Tuesday, one team, with some travel delays, getting in late Wednesday. All the teams able to get in a practice round Thursday afternoon. This event’s traditionally been held in North Carolina. Now the league’s putting it on a four year rotation of different courses in different states, with Shark’s Tooth being one of them! “Well I think for their side it’s being able to experience different facilities.” Watersound Golf G.M. Patrick Richardson told me Thursday. “And different parts of the country. And it gives them a little bit of excitement getting outside their normal area routine, of playing in golf events. That’s exciting for them. For us, it’s really just about showcasing our facility, and putting it out there that we have a championship golf course here. “
Coach Trey Jones and his Florida State golf team you might say, with a bit of a “home course” advantage. Many of the players on this team a bit more familiar with Shark’s Tooth because it’s close to home. FSU also hosted the Watersound Invitational at the start of this golf season back in late February. I asked the coach if that gives them any edge?
”Well, it’s really helped today, which is the practice round. We’ve seen it. We have a really good idea of what we want to do. We were able to prepare before we came, and now we have to execute, so the golf course is in great shape. The staff here has done an amazing job. It’s going to be a good weekend.”
The competition begins Friday with 36 holes of stroke play. Another 18 holes Saturday. Then Sunday the top four teams move into a match play format, with the final round set for Monday morning. I asked coach Jones if he likes that relatively new format for this championship?
”Well we’ve only done it for one year. And it’s something that we have to prepare for the National Championship. And anything we do here should be preparing us for that. And that’s why we did it. We need match play experience in Scottsdale, at the National Championship. And this is just another way we can get it for our players.”
The tournament is opent o the public with no charge to attend.
