The Solano Commission for Women and Girls invites the community to the 2nd annual Birth Justice Solano 2022: Education, Awareness, and Solutions Towards Better Birth Outcomes.”
The commission will partner with birth and postpartum doula, Davon Crawford, to host a community action and awareness event in response to the fact that black and brown women are three to four times more likely to die from pregnancy or childbirth in the United States.
From research the commission conducted to create its Status Report in 2020, it found that rates of death in Solano County are the highest of all the Bay Area counties. In an attempt to address this disparity, the event will focus on education from a panel of experts that will include a doula, lactation consultant and a maternal health therapist to discuss black maternal and infant health disparities and solutions.
There will be storytelling from mothers about their birthing experiences. The commission encourages empowerment and action through strategizing how to reduce the maternal and infant health disparity in Solano County and achieve Birth Justice.
Also featured will be the spoken word from Vallejo’s Poet Laureate, along with a visual scribe who will capture the day’s events graphically in real time.
Raffles and door prizes will be given throughout the event.
The free virtual event will be held on Zoom from 10 a.m.-1 p.m. May 7.
