JACKSON, MI – About 250 Jackson College students will cross the stage to receive their diplomas on Saturday.
The college’s fall 2021, spring 2022 and summer 2022 graduates will gather at 11 a.m., April 30, outside Bert Walker Hall on the college’s main Summit Township campus. In the case of inclement weather, commencement ceremonies will move inside the Potter Center.
The college also had commencement outdoors in September to allow for social distancing during the COVID-19 pandemic. Social distancing will occur once more on Saturday, with attendees to sit in designated areas in the Walker Hall parking lot. Faculty and staff will sit on the hall’s terrace.
The commencement ceremonies will also honor a pair of alumni with awards. The first is Jackson County Undersheriff Christopher Simpson, who will receive the 2022 Ethelene Jones Crockett Distinguished Alumni Award.
Simpson, who also recently was appointed as a Jackson College Board of Trustees member, previously served as a Jackson police officer for 26 years. He earned the college’s honor through his community leadership with organizations including the Domestic Violence Coordinating Council, the Jackson County’s NAACP, Jackson’s YMCA and the Jackson County Chamber of Commerce.

The college’s 2022 Distinguished Service Award also will be given to Jackson Junior College alumnus Leland Bassett. He co-founded Detroit-based Bassett & Bassett, Inc., a commercial communication arts and sciences-based professional services firm, with his spouse, Tina, in 1986.
The couple also established the Bassett Nursing Scholarship in honor of his mother Vera, “who was instrumental in establishing the Jackson College nursing program,” college officials said. The scholarship has benefitted 300 students to date.
More information on the commencement ceremony may be found on the Jackson College website.
