SAMMAMISH, Wash. – Host No. 8 WASHINGTON held off numerous challenges to capture its first Pac-12 Men’s Golf Championship in 12 years on Wednesday at par-71, 6,979-yard Aldarra Golf Club. UW senior Noah Woolsey claimed medalist honors, the first Husky to do so since 2009.
The Huskies (2-over 1422) held at least a share of the lead all four rounds, closing at 7-over-par 362 on Wednesday to fend off late-charging No. 17 STANFORD (5-over 1425) by three shots and third-place No. 4 ARIZONA STATE (10-over 1430) by eight. It marks Washington’s first Pac-12 title since going back-to-back in 2009 and 2010.
After opening 5-over through two holes on Wednesday, UW’s scoring lineup combined for 15 mid-round birdies to keep Stanford and ASU from spoiling its chance to hoist the hardware at home.
Woolsey, who opened with a tourney-low 65 but trailed Stanford’s Barclay Brown by one the next two rounds, provided three of UW’s mid-round birdie barrage to both stabilize the Huskies and wrestle away the individual lead.
A double bogey on the par-4 17th and wayward tee shot on the 18th put his title hopes in jeopardy, but Woolsey (8-under 276) delivered a clutch approach to 10-feet for an easy par and one-shot win over Brown (7-under 277).
Pac-12 teams now turn their attention to postseason competition which will begin with NCAA Regional play May 15-18 followed by the NCAA Championships hosted by Arizona State at Grayhawk Golf Club in Scottsdale, Ariz., May 27-June 1. The NCAA Selection Show will air on GOLF Channel on May 4 at 1:00 p.m. PT.
