The Staten Island FerryHawks are hoping the support of some local Little Leaguers will help turn around a 1-13 start to the season.
On Wednesday, Staten Island University Hospital Community Park will host Great Kills Little League when the FerryHawks take on the York Revolution. The three-game set starts tonight at 6:30.
The park will host Staten Island LL on Sunday, as well as Mid-Island (May 24) and Snug Harbor (May 25) later this month.
All seven Staten Island Little Leagues will visit the ballpark at some point this season.
Attendees will receive discounted tickets and be given a Little League bracelet at the stadium, as well as free tickets to a future game. A portion of the proceeds will be donated back to each respective Little League.
The FerryHawks will wear special alternate jerseys on Little League nights, reflective of District 24′s teams and colors.
“What we want to do is honor Staten Island Little Leagues and form a tight relationship between the FerryHawks and Little League,” said team president Eric Shuffler. “It’s a special night to honor each league.”
Shuffler noted that Little Leaguers will be incorporated into pregame festivities and between innings promotions. The team’s custom jerseys will be auctioned off at the end of the season and the proceeds will be donated to Little League.
“We want to make everybody part of the FerryHawk family,” said general manager Gary Perone. “Little League Night is a fundraiser to promote Little Leagues…we want to have them involved and be very present with them.”
FerryHawks general manager/vice president Gary Perone will be inducted into the New York State Baseball Hall of Fame later this year. Perone will join Bucky Dent, Luis Tiant, David Cone, Goose Gossage, and a slew of other household names at the Nov. 13 induction ceremony, which will be held in Troy, N.Y.
After a two-decade run as the Brooklyn Cyclones assistant GM, Perone joined the FerryHawks front office last year.
He routinely helped lead the Cyclones to the top of the NY-Penn League’s attendance records each season. He also received numerous awards for his promotional efforts, including Minor League Baseball’s Larry MacPhail Award for promotional excellence.
“Gary Perone has a very impressive body of work in the great game of baseball,” said Rene LeRoux, founder and executive director of the NYS Baseball Hall of Fame. “Gary is a fan of the game at every level…[He] has a feel for the fans, the game, and the players.”
