Salina Elementary and Salina Intermediate schools are inviting local residents to a community meeting to talk about Green Schoolyards.
The Green Schoolyards program is a joint initiative of the City of Dearborn, ACCESS and Dearborn Public Schools.
At the meeting, the district and the Salina community will present their vision for the Green Schoolyard plan and gather community input and suggestions.
The meeting will be held from 6 to 7 p.m. May 18 inside Salina Elementary School.
Green Schoolyard programs are a deliberate effort to include more landscaping and natural habitats in and around schools, including the play areas.
Studies have shown a correlation between green spaces in schools and communities and student well-being and academic achievement.
Anyone who wants to attend should enter through the front door and proceed to the second-floor media center.
Green Schoolyards America, a national organization that advocates for plans similar to what the two Salina schools are planning, has helped hundreds of schools with planning.
“Living school grounds are richly layered outdoor environments that strengthen local ecological systems while providing place-based, hands-on learning resources for children and youth of all ages,” said Green Schoolyards America CEO Sharon Danks. “They are child-centered places that foster empathy, exploration, adventure, and a wide range of play and social opportunities, while enhancing health and well-being and engaging the community.”
