Clyde Fire to host NOVFA Convention in 2023 – The News-Messenger

CLYDE — The Clyde Fire Department will play host in June 2023 for the three-day Northwestern Ohio Volunteer Firefighters Association Convention.
The convention location was approved by the NOVFA board earlier this summer.
“It’s the 150th anniversary as a department in 2023,” CFD spokesman Michael Carter said. “We want the public to know they are invited to the event.”
This will be the first firefighters convention in Clyde in nearly 20 years.
“2003 was the last time we held a convention,” Carter said. “Before that they tried to host it every 10 years.”
Clyde firefighters began planning for 2023 way ahead of time. The firefighters went before City Council and received permission to host the convention and then presented their bid to the NOVFA board.
Carter said many of the traditional convention activities will be planned.
Those will include water ball, in which two fire departments use water hoses in a tug of war-type challenge in which they push a ball on a cable back and forth until it passes a certain mark.
There also will be a queen’s contest where area volunteer fire departments have their queens compete for the NOVFA crown. There will be two parades — one Friday night called Cruise Night for fire engines with lights and sirens and then a Saturday parade for fire vehicles from participating departments with lights only. The latter parade wraps up the convention activities.
Carter said the convention itself has a pretty set schedule of activities, although the CFD has not announced plans for celebrating its 150th anniversary.
The convention will include food vendors and other displays and possible vendors downtown.
“There will be a camping area for the (visiting) departments,” Carter said..
While preparing for the big 2023 event, the Clyde Fire Department is also hosting the 2022 NOVFA Golf Outing at Green Hills Golf Course on Ohio 101, south of the city.
That event for NOVFA departments will be Sept. 24. Clyde Firefighters Association President Raffy Reyes is chairman of the golf outing and there is still time to enter; call Reyes at 419-307-7147 to register by the Aug. 21 deadline.
Charles Horne, NOVFA treasurer and Green Springs Volunteer fire captain, said there are nearly 240 volunteer departments that are members of NOVFA.
“We average around 80 to 100 departments represented at some point during a normal convention,” he added.
Of the NOVFA member departments, 10 serve in Sandusky County and eight in Ottawa County. Member fire departments in Sandusky County include Ballville Township, Clyde, Fremont, Gibsonburg, Helena, Lindsey, Sandusky Township, Townsend Township, Woodville and Bellevue (Huron County). In Ottawa County NOVFA members include Alan Clay Joint, Bay Township, Catawba Island, Erie Township, Harris-Elmore, Materion, Port Clinton and Put-in-Bay. For more information on NOVFA visit
