Holly Pond community enjoys special event
HOLLY POND, Ala. – The Holly Pond Volunteer Fire Department (VFD) and the Town of Holly Pond hosted the inaugural Day in the Park at Governors Park Saturday. Volunteer firefighters and first responders introduced themselves to the community and gave various equipment demonstrations.
Holly Pond VFD Chief Mike Harrison said, “We’re trying to show the community what we have. A lot of people don’t know what kind of apparatus we have, and we’re also just trying to connect with the community.”
Kids enjoyed taking pictures with Sparky the Dog, water from the firehose and visiting the smoke trailer. The West Point VFD provided the demonstration smoke trailer for the event so attendees could see how fast a trailer fills with smoke and be advised of the best ways to exit.
Attendees could also try on firefighter turnout gear, which Harrison described as “basically a full-size oven mitt.” VFD members taught kids about the importance of each piece of gear and gave safety tips to follow in the event of a fire.
Free blood pressure checks were offered, and residents signed up for free smoke detectors and professional installation. Members of the Cullman County Sheriff’s Office and Cullman EMS were also at the park to interact with guests.
Hamburgers and hotdogs were supplied by Temple Baptist Church. Pepsi provided free drinks, and Kona Ice had sweet treats, donating some of its proceeds to the fire department.
Harrison said there were as many people in attendance as he had hoped for, and then some. “I’d say it was a success. We had a very good turnout.”
