Becca Westerfield has a good problem. Her business Becca Bakes continues to outgrow the spaces she is using to create her bakery items.
She recently moved into her own location with a storefront at 4026 Frederica Street. While she plans to host events there, for now it’s mostly just used for making cakes and bakery items.
“When all is said and done, this will be a location where slices of cake, cupcakes, and cookies can be enjoyed,” she said.
She has two farmhouse tables in the front where she can seat around 30 people. There is also an area in the back for smaller parties, and where she will also offer training and decorating events.
Westerfield began by creating birthday, baby shower, and wedding cakes out of her home in 2019 while she also worked for an attorney. She said that soon she realized she was working two full-time jobs and that something had to give.
“I took a leap of faith,” she said of her decision.
The pandemic only slowed down wedding cake orders because people were still wanting birthday cakes and porch dropoffs. After restrictions were lifted and the COVID brides began planning weddings, she will have made 30 wedding cakes for 2022.
In late 2021, Westerfield began sharing a location with Joy’s Cooking Classes, but she quickly outgrew that space and has worked out of rented, commercial kitchens until she opened her storefront.
Dreaming of the perfect layouts for parties and events has kept Westerfield busier as she hopes to host several community events, along with private parties.
She is also glad that having more kitchen space will allow for more storefront orders and that she can branch out and do more baking and creative entertaining.
“I am offering grazing tables and charcuterie boards in the store,” she said.
Balloon World will also help decorate the party areas so that in-house birthday parties and events can all be ordered at the same location.
“As a mom, I would love that,” she said.
Westerfield hopes to hold an open house event at the beginning of November and is already planning her first public party to be a Halloween-themed event on October 29, when people can come in costume for a contest, decorate cookies, and have food stations. Items will also be available for purchase.
She is also planning other “fun” events like Christmas photos to make use of the fireplace she has in the front area and a “Storytime with Santa” the first weekend of December.
“Several events being held there in October will delay the grand opening of the storefront,” she said. “But I have plenty of orders that are keeping me busy.”
Becca Bakes continues to rely on her social media pages, email, and phone for questions and orders.
