SAGINAW, MI– La Unión Cívica Mexicana of Saginaw, now celebrating its 77th anniversary, has announced it will be putting on a Saginaw Taco Fest on Saturday, Sept. 10.
Running from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Serra Chevrolet (4200 Bay Rd.) the event is being done to celebrate ahead of Hispanic Heritage Month (Sept. 15 – Oct. 15) in the Great Lakes Bay Region.
So far eight taco vendors or food trucks have been confirmed as attending and Larry Rodarte, director of La Cívica, says because of even more resident and business outreach on social media the event had to be moved to a venue with more space.
“La Cívica needs help, and we need to unite the community do to that,” Rodarte said. “It gets dark, we have parking limitations, we need lighting upgrades and all that costs money. With such an enormous response, our friends at Serra Chevrolet said we host it there, especially with the open lot space made by the recent lag in new car production.”
The long-time Cívica organization at 2715 Wadsworth will also be seeking grants and sponsors for donations to make what they’re calling the “Cívica Parking Lot Upgrade” a reality. Plans include expanded parking, new outside lights, and fencing on the east side of the building.
“It’s time that we upgrade the parking lot for this historic building,” Rodarte adds. “It really bothers me when I see women in high heels walking down Wadsworth Street in the dark because they had to park so far away for one of our popular dances.”
Admission to the event is $5, with children under 10 free.
Rodarte says many other communities have “Taco Festivals,” which don’t always financially benefit their local Latino communities, so Saginaw has several reasons to host one.
Vendors participating include:
The Ballet Folklorico Moyocoyani Izel from Detroit will be on display sharing several cultural performances. At the same time, Mariachi Los Gallos de Detroit will play traditional strolling Mexican ballads while patrons enjoy their fresh, delicious tacos.
La Unión Cívica Mexicana was formed in 1945 by 11 Latino founders who sought basic civil rights for those who had already become Saginaw residents and the growing number of migrant workers who came to the area and stayed in-part to employment at the GM iron plant.
In 1980, La Cívica was expanded to 6,237 square feet- doubling its size and adding a stage after fundraising efforts launched at a visit by then-candidate Jimmy Carter in 1976.
According to Cívica leaders, the parking lot has not had new pavement laid or any complete reconstruction for more than 30 years. So far this summer, the Cívica hall has been utilized every weekend for parties, funeral luncheons, and seasonal event rentals and has held weekly sales of patito dinners, a popular deep-fried taco dish.
“It’s amazing to see so many people coming to this hall, especially non-Hispanics, because they love our food,” said Rodarte. “This historic hall represents the Mexican and Latino community of Saginaw. We have to move to be better at our representation as a vital entity in the greater Saginaw community. I hope many will get behind this effort[.]”
