Huskers host Georgia Southern in first night game – WOWT

OMAHA, Neb. (WOWT) – This is one that won’t be forgotten for a long time, Georgia Southern out of the Sun Belt beat the Huskers 45-42 with a touchdown in the final minute.

The Eagles took the field at Memorial Stadium, hoping to be the third team from the Sun Belt to pull off an upset Saturday. The Eagles had a great first quarter with 134 yards of offense. They scored two touchdowns on their first two possessions. The Huskers also scored one, Casey Thompson ran one in from eight yards out, that tied the game at seven.
Early in the second quarter Thompson found Brody Belt for his first career touchdown. It was a 21 yard connection over the middle. On the next possession Georgia Southern took a deep shot that was intercepted by Marques Buford at the Nebraska 24 yard line. That turnover led to an Anthony Grant touchdown, his fifth of the season. Nebraska moved in front 21-14, first lead of the game. Georgia Southern answer with back-to-back Gerald Green touchdowns to build a 28-21 lead. Green ran for 120 yards in the first half on only five carries, that’s an average of 24 yard per carry. In the final two minutes of the first Thompson scored his second rushing touchdown. The game was tied 28-28 at the half. The Eagles had 364 yards of offense, the Huskers 325.
Third quarter, Georgia Southern scored on its first possession to take a 35-28 lead. Nebraska responded with an Ajay Allen seven yard rushing touchdown to tie the game at 35-35 with 3:18 to go in the quarter. It went to the final quarter tied at 35.

Alex Raynor kicked a 19 yard field goal early in the fourth quarter for Georgia Southern, they moved back in front 38-35. Midway through the fourth the Eagles had a chance to add to their lead but Marques Buford Jr. brought in his second interception of the game, that was deep the Huskers end. 98 plays later Casey Thomspon scored a go ahead touchdown, Nebraska led 42-38 with 3:05 to go. Georgia Southern scored again with 36 seconds left, a Kyle Vantrease eight yard touchdown run that turned out to be the game winner. They had 642 yards of offense, a massive number that almost broke a Nebraska record.
