Hatteras Community Sailing is hosting its 2nd Annual Hatteras Lighthouse One Design Regatta this Sept 23-25 at Frisco Woods. This year, in addition to a wonderfully fun sailing event, there will be a “Build your own boat” Boatbuilders Challenge on Saturday afternoon Sept 24.
Youth and even the young at heart are welcome to build a Boat Entry for the fun racing event, which happens just before dinner, drinks and entertainment begin on Saturday evening. Hatteras Sailing created this event to promote maritime heritage and future generations of boatbuilders on Hatteras Island.
Participants build their own craft. There are only a few rules to keep it simple, which include, no wood, metal, fiberglass, motors, etc. Boats can be built from cardboard, tape, glue, foam, plastic, etc. Contestants will race a short and shallow water race around the buoys near shore at Frisco Woods Campground. Prizes and awards will be given for the First, 2nd, 3rd, place finishers as well as some awards for best design, most attractive, most innovative etc.
The event is open to all and is fun for the kids and the adults to watch. The process of making a makeshift vessel to enter the competition really gets one’s brain thinking about hull forms, stability, resistance, fabrication techniques, water sealing and waterproofing and alternative building supplies. It is a wonderfully educational STEM reinforcing fun event. There is a First Place finisher cash award of $250 for the contender who finished the race in first place.
There is a small registration fee of $25 and an online registration at
All proceeds from the event and the regatta go to support and subsidize the costs involved with coaching, boats, and junior sailing classes for local Hatteras Island Youth. We hope you will join us Sat Sept 24 at 4 pm to participate and/or spectate this fun activity. Dinner, Drinks and Entertainment are open to all. More information on dinner tickets, bottomless pints, and regatta apparell are online at hatterassailing.org
