ANN ARBOR, MI — An Ann Arbor coffee shop primarily employing people with disabilities is set to host its grand opening this weekend.
Bitty & Beau’s Coffee, 305 S. Main St., will host a grand opening at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 17. The coffee shop is the company’s 14th overall and first in Michigan.
Owners Ben and Amy Wright launched the coffee company in 2016 as a way to change the way people see those with disabilities. The couple has four children, two of whom have Down syndrome and are namesakes of the coffee shop and one of whom has autism.
“Eighty percent of people with disabilities don’t have jobs — and we’re out to change that,” Amy Wright said in a statement announcing the opening. “Not just by providing employment opportunities for people with disabilities, but by showing our guests what’s possible.”

Bitty & Beau’s Coffee announced plans to come to Michigan June 2021 and hosted a job fair earlier this year.
“Most people that will come and apply for jobs have never done this interview process before, so we make sure they leave feeling really good about themselves and the experience they had,” Wright has said. “We make a big deal out of everything from the interview to the offer to the training to the grand opening.”
The shop meets its employees where they are, making a variety of accommodations. Modifications include using a playing card system instead of taking names for drinks and installing counters at a height friendly to those with disabilities. Shops also have daily dance parties.
“Bitty & Beau’s Coffee has created a path for people with disabilities to become valued, accepted and included in every community — we’ve said it from the start — it’s more than just a cup of coffee,” Wright said in a statement.
Bitty & Beau’s Coffee, 305 S. Main St., will be open daily 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Find the shop online, on social media or by phone at 734-881-7919.
