MITCHELL — A challenging first half of the season for the Mitchell High School football team culminates Friday, as the Kernels host Sioux Falls Jefferson, the top-ranked team from Class 11AAA, on homecoming. Here’s what to know ahead of the contest:
7 p.m. Friday
Joe Quintal Field
Mitchell 1-3; Sioux Falls Jefferson 4-0.
Mitchell and Jefferson have never met on the gridiron before, as the Cavaliers’ program is only in its second year of existence.
Mitchell struggled with turnovers in a 27-13 road defeat to Aberdeen Central, while Jefferson rolled to a 49-8 win over Rapid City Central.
The Kernels fell out of the top five but still received two votes in the most recent Class 11AA media poll. Jefferson, meanwhile, has been the top-ranked team in Class 11AAA since Aug. 29, with the Cavaliers currently standing as the unanimous No. 1 and lone undefeated team in the class.
