Something extra spooky fun is coming to downtown Amherst from 5:30 to 8 p.m., Oct. 26, as the community comes together for the first Witches Wednesday event.
The idea hails from Amherst resident Judy Recknagel’s love of all things spooky, and area small businesses culminating in a night straight out of Hocus Pocus.
The evening will start at Captain’s Club in downtown with fresh apple cider, doughnuts and a selfie station before delving into the night.
But how does this pertain to witches?
For Recknagel, that’s the best part.
“For those attending, we want them to wear a witches hat they design, and then throughout the night, they can decorate it by purchasing items from around downtown,” she said.
At the end of the night, Recknagel and participants will converge on the new 5 Points Tavern for a hat judging contest with prizes to boot.
The contest judging will take place at 8:30 p.m. right after the event concludes for the night with an extra witchy prize for the winner.
“We will have a beautiful fancy witches broom that we designed available for the winner as well as a decorated cone to mark their own parking spot in downtown,” Recknagel said. “Both will be available to the winner for the rest of the year until the event takes place again.”
Recknagel said she sees this night as not only a time for fun shenanigans, but also a chance to continue to support the local downtown businesses as they head into the holiday season.
As the witches fly, “stores participating will have a window cling or some other sort of marker, letting folks know,” she said.
