San Francisco residents host adult prom on car-free stretch of JFK Drive – SFGATE

People dance in a circle together during the Prom on the Prom(enade) event held on JFK Drive in Golden Gate Park in San Francisco, on Saturday, Oct. 8, 2022.
Saturday’s foggy skies didn’t deter a number of San Francisco residents from dressing up and heading out to John F. Kennedy Promenade for the city’s first-ever Prom on the Prom, a whimsical event where attendees could create new prom memories as adults – in Golden Gate Park instead of a high school gymnasium.
Guests arrived at the event in their fanciest – or silliest – attire, ready to dance, mingle and eat donut holes biked in from Bob’s Donuts
“About four months ago, I tweeted about this idea: prom on the prom, it’s a dance, it’s a celebration, who would be down for it? And then a bunch of people responded, and I was like, all right, I’m going to do it,” said Sarah Katz-Hyman, an organizer of the event who also co-founded the local web series “Comedians on Bicycles Getting Bobs.”
Katz-Hyman said that an important aspect of the prom was to show support for Proposition J, which would reaffirm the San Francisco Board of Supervisors’ April vote to prohibit vehicle traffic on John F. Kennedy Drive.

“I think it’s a really important part of the event, to show all the possibilities here with the promenade. We’re obviously very much in favor of Prop J passing,” Katz-Hyman said.
The event featured a DJ, food truck and photo booth. Organizers even crowned a prom court, along with other superlatives.
“It’s just awesome to see the community come together and enjoy the promenade in a different way,” Katz-Hyman said. “I would love for this event to grow more and more each year and become a celebration for people to dance and be joyful together.”
