Through the generosity of member donations and a Beacon Grant from the Elks National Foundation in Chicago (elks.org), the Tahoe-Douglas Elks are showing their support for students and staff at Meneley Elementary school.
Beacon Grants provide an opportunity for Elks Lodges around the nation to establish ongoing charitable projects in their communities. Locally, this funding has helped purchase school supplies, books, winter clothing, Walk-a-Thon prizes, and various items to enrich Meneley’s STEM programming.
Scientific, Technology, Engineering and Math purchases included robotics items, batteries, tools, and general supplies. A group of Elks volunteers also gave their time and expertise to provide assistance to Meneley’s teachers and students during the school’s recent activities that focused on STEM-based learning.
The Tahoe/Douglas Elks host their annual Hoop Shoot Contest on Saturday, November 5 at the Douglas County Community Center gym in Gardnerville. Boys and girls between the ages 8-13 as of April 1, 2023, are eligible to compete.
Registration opens at 9 a.m., and the contest gets underway at 10 a.m. Boys’ and girls’ competitions are separated by age divisions of 8-9, 10-11, and 12-13 years old.
First place winners from the local contest will participate in the district tournament on January 14, 2023, at Boys & Girls Club in Reno. State Hoop Shoot finals are scheduled in Hawthorne, NV on February 11, followed by regional finals in Las Vegas on February 25. National finals take place in Chicago on April 23, 2023.
All expenses are paid for contestants (and their families) who participate in the regional finals and National finals.

Douglas Disposal’s autumn clean up
Douglas Disposal’s fall clean-up week takes place the week of October 24-28. Active weekly residential customers in Nevada can place up to six 32-gallon cans (max weight 50 lbs.) and/or bags (max weight 35 lbs.) roadside on their regular refuse day for no extra charge. One-foot by three-foot tied bundles will also be accepted.
Appliances, computers, furniture, hazardous materials, tires, or TVs are not included in this offer and will not be picked up.
Douglas Disposal requests all garbage totes, cans, and/or bags be placed “roadside,” meaning in the gutter or at the drivable road’s edge. Due to recent bear activity in our area, customers are advised to take trash to the curb the morning of their regular pickup day instead of the night before.
Call Douglas Disposal at 775-782-5713 with any questions about the fall clean-up week.
