HOUGHTON, MICH. — In a Yooper twist on the haunted house experience, a historic Upper Peninsula copper mine is getting a spooky makeover for Halloween.
For three days at the end of October, Houghton’s Quincy Mine will once again host haunted house-style walking tours presented by Michigan Technological University performing arts students.
The annual event showcases the Quincy Mine, a historic copper mining complex in the Keweenaw Peninsula that operated from the mid-1800′s to roughly the mid-1900′s.
With this year’s theme of “Cryptid Menagerie,” Haunted Mine guests will take a tram down to the entrance of the mine, then continue on foot for a walking tour of creepy, funny, and scary vignettes of creatures like Bigfoot, the Hodag, and Mothman, according to organizers.
Tours are self-guided; the tram will run from 6-10 p.m. on the nights of October 27, 28, and 29. Children under 12 must be accompanied by an adult.
Content considerations include jumpscares, flickering and strobing lights, loud sounds, and fog. The tours are not recommended for young children or those who prefer not to be scared, organizers said. Visitors are encouraged to dress for cool to cold weather and to wear comfortable shoes that can handle some dirt.
More details and ticket information can be found at https://events.mtu.edu/event/michigantechtheatre_hauntedmine2022. Tickets are $10 for adults, $5 for youth at the Quincy Mine gift shop.
