BALLSTON SPA, N.Y. — High school students from the Ballston Spa Central School District are getting ready to rumble – robot rumble!
Students in the school district’s For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology (FIRST) Robotics program are hosting this year’s 2022 Robot Rumble Off-Season Robotics Competition. The competition, which will include students from across New York, Connecticut, and Massachusetts, will be held at Ballston Spa High School on Saturday, Nov. 5 from 8:30 am to 4 pm. Competition spectating is free and open to the public.
FIRST Robotics competitions combine the excitement of sport with the rigors of science and technology. Under strict rules, limited resources, and time limits, teams of 15 students or more are challenged to raise funds, design a team “brand,” hone teamwork skills, and build and program robots to perform prescribed tasks against a field of competitors. It’s as close to real-world engineering as a student can get. Volunteer professional mentors lend their time and talents to guide each team.
FIRST Robotics programs give students the opportunity to learn “21st century skills.” Through the process of building and competing with a robot of their own design, they learn to use sophisticated software and hardware and to compete and cooperate in alliances and tournaments. Off-season competitions provide an opportunity for teams to have fun and to recruit new students, industry mentors, and sponsors as they begin preparing for the FIRST Robotics Regional Competition in March 2023.
Ballston Spa High School is excited to be able to host the competition again after not being able to hold it for the last two years due to the pandemic. Four area FIRST Robotics teams from Ballston Spa, Shenendehowa, Shaker, and Colonie have collaborated to organize this year’s event. Support for the competition also comes from a grant through The Global Foundries/Town of Malta Foundation.
Similar competitions for elementary and middle school aged students will take place in December and January. The 2023 season for the FIRST Robotics Competition teams begins in January, and includes a regional event at the MVP Arena on March 30 and April 1.
