From paintings, jewelry, pottery, fibers arts and more, pARTiculars Art Gallery and Teaching Studio is having its second annual holiday art fair, through Sunday, Dec. 11.
The art gallery, on 401 South Public Road in Lafayette, has been in business for 14 years. Peter Steele, one of the owners, said that the space is an artist owned, cooperative gallery. The gallery features local artists and provides classes as well. The gallery has six owner-artists and 10 members. Steele said that these artist-owners and members help to staff the gallery, teach art lessons and help with business operations. Those artists can also sell their work at the gallery for a commission. He also included that both selling and teaching art are a crucial part of pARTiculars.
The holiday art fair helps to showcase local artists’ work. The pARTiculars art gallery website states that the fair is a great way to find holiday gifts and support local artists.
Steele said that Nancy West, the owner of the building, has been a huge supporter of the art gallery.
“She wanted to get more art in Lafayette,” Steele said.
Steele said that 15 years ago, West met with him and other local artists and came up with the cooperative art gallery structure. Steele stated that West has always been a champion for the gallery, and even reduced the building’s rent by half during the height of the pandemic. Steele said that local art galleries are a “dying breed” and credits West with their success.
Steele said that the gallery recognizes the need for a relationship between artists and the community. The gallery is a chance for artists to display their art and get more exposure.
Steele is a natural landscape photographer and has a unique process he coined as “solarograpghy.” He said that it was a stained glass concept, with the landscape being best seen when backlit by the sun. Steele said his photographic stained glass inspired concept sets him apart from other landscape artists.
Twice a year, pARTiculars has a community art show. Laurie Adams entered into the show, and was invited to be a member of the gallery. She said that while she uses many different mediums in her work, her emphasis is watercolor. And she teaches watercolor classes at the gallery.
The gallery’s focus on community inclusion extends to more than just artists. The gallery also has free class offerings for people who were affected by the Marshall Fire. Steele said that art can be therapeutic and healing, and wants to offer that opportunity to the community. Adams said that art can help maintain memories, even when something is no longer there.
“Nothing beats hands-on learning when you’re trying to learn a technique,” Adams said.
Adams said that in-person learning allows for her to correct any mistake and prevent any gaps in knowledge. She said that her beginning water classes are technique driven, and students do not often leave with a finished painting, but rather with new skills. Adams included that she loves creating and teaching art.
Adams and Steele highlighted the uniqueness of the art at pARTiculars. Supporting local artists means supporting the community and local businesses. Adams said that the gallery has had a new influx of visitors who are discovering local Lafayette artists.
