NORMAL, Ill. – After opening the 2023 season last weekend at Western Michigan, the Illinois State gymnastics team returns home this weekend to host its first two meets of the season. The Redbirds will host fellow Midwest Independent Conference member Lindenwood on Friday at 7 p.m., before competing against Western Michigan for the second time in 2023 on Sunday at 2 p.m.
"Both of our meets this weekend will pose a big challenge," ISU head coach Bob Conkling said. "Lindenwood had their first meet last weekend and scored slightly higher than we did, and Western Michigan beat us on Sunday. The good news is we are ready to do better this weekend, and both meets will be a lot of fun to watch. It could come down to the last event and maybe the last routine to see who wins on both Friday and Sunday, so it should be a great weekend for our fans to see some top-notch gymnastics."
The Redbirds finished second in the season-opening tri-meet at Western Michigan last Sunday against the host Broncos and UW-Oshkosh with a total score of 192.825. Senior Angelica Labat once again led the way for ISU, finishing second in the all-around which led to her being named the MIC Gymnast of the Week. Junior Madison Kipp also had a strong performance on beam for the Redbirds, winning the competition with a score of 9.850 which earned her MIC Performance of the Week honors.
Lindenwood heads in with two meets under its belt, following a quad meet at Florida last Friday and a home meet Sunday against MIC foe Southeast Missouri State. The Lions finished fourth in the opener against the Gators, West Virginia and Ball State with a score of 193.125, but bounced back for the dual meet win over the Redhawks with a score of 193.200 two days later. Jaly Jones won the all-around against SEMO, claiming her first collegiate victory in the event with her strong overall performance. Gayla Griswold was the vault winner with her score of 9.875, which was the highest score of the day for Lindenwood.
Western Michigan took the top spot in their season opener with a total of 194.875 over Illinois State and UW-Oshkosh. The Broncos topped the leaderboard in four of the five individual events and all four team events. Cassie St. Clair was the top performer on vault with a score of 9.850, Sarah Moravansky won the uneven bars with a score of 9.850, Donna Kathryn Roy won the floor with a score of 9.875 and Dani Petrousek claimed the all-around with a score of 38.950.
