YPSILANTI, MI – The Ypsilanti Freighthouse will double as a stage this year through a new city partnership with an arts presenter at the University of Michigan. And residents now have a chance to shape the schedule.
University Musical Society is hosting a community forum at this historic Depot Town building at 4:30 p.m. Friday, Jan. 20, to invite input from anyone on the kind of arts programming it should put on.
UMS, a nonprofit affiliated with UM, struck an agreement with the city last year to host two- to four-week artistic residencies at the Freighthouse twice a year.

Representatives of the group, which hosts music, theater and dance from around the world on UM campuses, told city leaders “the sky is the limit” for what kind of events could come to Depot Town.
They could include smaller-scale jazz or classical music performances, or even storytelling sessions and yoga, among other events, UMS staff said last year, promising the schedule would be molded by community feedback.
“We want to prioritize programming and access for Ypsilanti residents. Our core purpose in this endeavor is to serve as an additive and supportive resource to the city of Ypsilanti by co-curating an engaging and diverse array of performing arts programs,” reads a description for the community forum.
For several years following a resident-led restoration effort, the Freighthouse, a rail depot dating back to 1878, has served as a city community center and events venue.
UMS is asking residents to RSVP to the forum via an online forum, and will provide free pizza and refreshments.
“Come dream with us!” the event description states.
