UW–Madison Game Lab to host 2023 Global Game Jam event Feb … – UW-Madison

The UW–Madison Game Lab, housed in the School of Education’s Department of Curriculum and Instruction, is hosting a 2023 Global Game Jam (GGJ) event on campus Feb. 3-5.
According to the GGJ website page, “A game jam is similar to a hackathon, where people come together for a short period of time to create games around a central theme revealed at the start of the jam. The structure of the GGJ is usually that everyone gathers on Friday late afternoon, watches a short video keynote with advice from leading game developers, and then a secret theme is announced. All jammers worldwide are then challenged to make games based on that same theme, with games to be completed by Sunday afternoon.”
Krista-Lee Malone, the coordinator of the UW–Madison Game Lab, says, “The GGJ will be a great opportunity to make friends. You can also use this opportunity to see what the UW Game Lab has to offer and test if working in games is something you might want to do. Games require a lot of different skill sets — not just coding — so if you can write, make art, design systems, or anything else, then join us!”
The event invites both experienced game creators, as well as those new to the art to spend multiple days working on game design and development.
The 2023 Global Game Jam event will be fully in person and run from Friday, Feb. 3, at 5:30 p.m., through Sunday, Feb. 5, at 6 p.m. (although the facility will close from midnight to 8 a.m. on Feb. 5). The UW–Madison Game Lab is located in room 130 of the Teacher Education building, 225 N. Mills St. Anyone who is at least 18 years old may participate in the GGJ, regardless of whether or not they are affiliated with the university.
